ABOUT THE PROJECT:
About the site: This project benefits from vast southern and south-western scenic views. The site looks over Kurrakwah Bay and Port Kembla beach, a pristine beach where the owners often see dolphins & seals frolicking in the clear water below. A beautiful but challenging site. Built on the southern side of what is called 'Hill 60', which is an 'all sand' foundation. Screw piles were used to anchor foundations down. Consulting with Geotechnical Engineers and a Structural Engineer to achieve a house that will be anchored into the side of the hill but at the same time trying to very gently touch the renown unstable hill. It was recommended that the existing slab of the existing dwelling be maintained to minimise disturbance to the site.
About the design: The existing footprint was maintained at ground level, while the upper level that being the entry level over hung the ground floor on either side like 2 overarching arms. Which gave the residence two well covered deck areas, for clothes drying and undercover entertaining. The ground floor hosts the bedrooms, bathrooms and a cosy tv room, for on those windy nights. While the upper level is the entry, kitchen, living areas and a home office.
The design provides beautiful light filled spaces. Double glazing was required on all the large southern picture windows to pass thermal requirements and helped with strengthening the glazed facade from the very strong southerly winds off the ocean.
Materials: Hyne Timber beams internally & external Tallowwood external timber cladding in a rainscreen technique, internal Oak timber floors,
Site constraints: geologically fragile & sand foundations
Authority Approvals: Development Application from Wollongong City Council
